Achillius - ancient european city
- Game Version:
- Cities XL 2012
- Cities XL Platinum
The first houses where build by the Romans at the end of the Roman-empire in the South-East of the country. They where build near one of the CANALS digged bij the romans themselves. In a short period of time there was a town named "Flevum" of 41.000 inhabitans and a small HARBOR. In the harbor you can still see some remainings of the medieval period. Near the canal there is also a LOCK, so there will be a constant waterlevel in the canals.
In the South-West near the river there is the old city center of ACHILLIUS devided in quarters/departments. The quarters are mainlijk seperated bij CANALS and look like "islands". ACHILLIUS started as the town MATILLO and as it grew, nearby villages and town where integrated and the city got the name ACHILLIUS.
The old city is serounded by a main canal and old city walls, some are also remainings of the medievel period, some are 14 - 17 century. The City gates are quit intact, some are partly destroyed by wars in the past. The are also some remains of old watch- and defense-towers and a couple of citadels.

Views of Achillius - ONE NEW PICTURE!
Citycenter Quarters / Departments
Achillius consists of several City Quarters. Because of the canals they are some sort of islands.
The olders harbor of Achillius one can find in the Harborquarter (Havenkwartier). There are still some industrial buildings. Most of the old buildings are nowadays offices and recidents buildings. On top of the entrance of the Harbor one can find a modern recidentscomplex.
The quarter Waterpoort is the `island` connected to the Watergate. In 1300 Watergate quarter was a fortress, later on it became a part of the City Achillius.Witte Vrouwen is a high class very rich quarter/department of the city. Nice shops and expensive houses and appartment one can find in Witte Vrouwen. In witte vrouwen is also the East gate of the city, and the music-theater for classical music.
In the medieval period the romans build a lot of warehouses for goods. Some still remain. The largest are near the old inner city wall. The oldest still remaining citywall. The warehouses are build against the wall. Nowadays these warehouses form a popular shopping area in the city with a lot of small boutiques.
Transportation - NEW!!
As the old city centre grew, the public transport system also expanded. The first trams were hors-trams. The first metro was introduced in 1890.
Here you can see the tram and metrosystem - it is not completed. Later on I will update this picture.

The Romans digged the canals in the city to provide the citizens easily of food and goods. The Nieuwe Gracht (New Canal) and the Prinsengracht (Prince`s canal) are connected - The Stadhoudersbrug (Stadtholdersbridge) is the border between these to canals. The bridge is formed by house, the canal runs beneath the houses.

The citygates, walls and citadels
The South Gate was build in 1575, construction took 5 years and was in the beginning the Main Gate of the city for people. Next to the South-Gate is the Watergate, the main gate for boats. By wars both gates could be closed bij large doors.
In the past there where four citygate one of them is the East Gate. Three of the gate are intact, the fourth one, the West Gate is mainly destroyed by wars. The inner citywall is part of the oldest city walls - it was the first wall constructed. When the city became larger - most of the inner city wall was destructed and re-used in the new wall.
