CITY OF KALMANKalman is the capital and largest city of Republic Nova Banovina,with an estimated population of 1,029,011. Kalman is the leading political, social and cultural center of Nova Banovina, and its region-wide influence in politics, education, entertainment, media, fashion, science, and the arts contribute to its status as Nova Banovina's biggest and most important economic center. The city is famous for its traditional cultural and religious diversity, with adherents of Islam, Catholicism, Orthodoxy and Judaism coexisting there for centuries.
The first time mentioned by name was the Slavic settlement about 1238/39 in a document of an Hungarian King. In ancient writing, it is written that a few surviving Knights after a battle arrived on the peninsula and founded the first settlement called Kalman (Survivor). Because of the pleasant climate and fertile soil grow the Settlement rapidly, at first it was emporium of the region, later royal residence, the Sultanate capital and after the statehood the state capital. Some present-day city parts were formerly independent towns and villages to the Merger. The city was subjected to different influences ranging from the Ottoman to the Austrian-Hungarian empire.
The city extends mostly in north south direction along the peninsula. This peninsula is the biggest on the lake called Kalman-Lake ("Kalmansko Jezero"), only the city-municipality Novi Grad (New City) with the Kalman International Airport are located on the east side on a smaller peninsula connected with 3 bridges and 1 Highway with the main City area and the main Downtown. The surrounding area of the city can be divided into two zones: 1) on the lakeside located area extends hilly inland direction cca. 10-19km, 2) the hilly terrain go over into mountains which are high up to 2200 m. The summers are mostly hot (32-40°C), mild springs and autumns and cold snowy Winters (-27°C measure 2009)
Under influence of different cultures and religionsis the whole state territory,capital included,is a colorful mix of different religions. The main 3 state-religions are Islam, Catholicism and Orthodoxy. Kalman is the seat of all three spiritual institutions. The population is about 45% Muslim, 29% Catholic, 18% Orthodox, 2% Jewish and 5% not religious. The City of Kalman have a Little bit complicated Administration based on the request of the Population. The main/highest Level of the City Administration is the "Municipality of the City of Kalman" (Općina Grad Kalman), divided into 6 City-parts-municipalitys (Gradska Općina), and this into districts (Kvart). Districts are just geographical or historical designation of city parts without any administrative units/levels. The City-Municipalities are: 1) Stari Grad (Old City), 2) Novi Grad (New City), 3) Novi Kalman (New Kalman), 4) Asdana, 5) Anif and 6) Haber. (White letters are district-names)
The municipality includes the districts Stari Grad, Kalbunar and Varoš, together they have 98,692 inhabitants, mostly muslims. Here rules the Old Town flair, many old buildings, the castle on the Town hill, Kings palace in the center, the old Parlaiment Building, "Sultanija"-mosque, Saint Elias Cathedral and many more...the people call this part of the city simply "Mahala" (Village). The main source of income is tourism and retail. The coat of arms symbols the old castle as "trademark" of the municipality, the sword mean power and the 3 stars the 3 districts.
The municipality includes the districts Kraljevica and Eldar. Until the completion of the bridge in 1923 was it an independent city. Today is it a part of Kalman and the magnet for wealthy people. Attractions like the Casino, beatiful residental areas, coast promenades, modern living buildings, golf course, Financial center Downtown Eldar, the proximity to main Downtown and much more make it to the feel-good place in the city. The municipality have 202,028 ihabitants. The Coat of Arms is the emblem of a popular Royal Family from Kraljevica (city founder).
The municipality Novi Kalman includes the districts Centar and Behar, together they have 428,703 inhabitants, and is the most populous municipality of the city. It is the most developed municipality, seat of the Government, Financial center of the city, canton and state. Expencive shops, many offices, hightowers, banks...a typical Financial District. Attractions like the "Zmaj od Bosne" (Dragon of Bosnia) football stadium, the TV tower, coast promenades, parks and beatiful areas make it interresant for tourists. The coat of arms is a stylized skyline silhouette.
With 125,200 inhabitants is the municipality Asdana one of the central population density in the city. It is a living and working area (offices&retail) next to holiday hotels and idylic residential areas. The heart of Asdana is the padestrian zone in the centre with the Kodak Theatre, Municipality Hall, shopping center and the Flower Boulevard. The popular hotels in this area are Hotel Lux and Hotel Sheraton. Next to the padestrian zone is the Sultan Ahmed Medresa (Islamic school).
The municipality Anif was incorporated as the last indenpendent town around Kalman (1964). Anif is located on the west coast of the lake behind the "Vilenica" hill and connected with the municipality Novi Kalman over Highway and Expressway (tunnel) and main road with the municipality Haber. Famous is the old town core with medieval church&houses and biggest padestrian zone of whole Kalman. It is mostly a quiet residential area with 63,679 inhabitants. The highest building is the "Blue Tower" (Plava zgrada)- Ministery for civil affairs.
The municipality Haber is a mostly residential area on the west side of the city under Anif. Once a indenpendent town, today own municipality in Kalman. The municipality is the one which go backward thanks to failed politics in the history. Unskilled and Skilled make the picture on the streets, some shops and a main central avenue with some offices. The politicans work on a plan to make the municipality more important for investors. Haber have a population of 110,709.
The Kalman International Airport is the main adress to travel out or in the city. It is located on the east side of the city in the municipality area of Novi Grad. The airport employs many people and provides domestic and foreign flights.
The road system of Kalman is difficult and easy at same time. Many roads cross the city like a cobweb. Kalman is on all main state roads connected and have a good infrastructure. Highways, Expressways, Avenues, Roads, Bridges, Bus, Tram, Taxi...everything you can use at your visit. Drive carefully!
