  1. Grosvenor Airport Expansion

    Wheelbarrow
    Grosvenor Airport Corporation (GAC), a privately-owned corporation that owns and manages Grosvenor International Airport, has recently released a new blueprint for the future expansion of the airport.

    Grosvenor Airport currently handles 16 million domestic passengers and 7 million international passengers annually. The Federal Government of New Albana and GAC recently came into agreement that the passenger movement at Grosvenor Airport will increase to at least 35 million altogether by 2030, an increase from the current total of 23 million passengers annually.

    Based on this projection for the year 2030, GAC has concluded that a significant expansion of the existing passenger terminal is absolutely necessary for the airport's future. However, the space for future expansion is extremely limited due to its close proximity to Grosvenor CBD (6.5km) and the airport is completely surrounded by suburban development therefore GAC needs to be very careful with its expansion design to maximise the use of land.

    Although there were some interior changes and modernisation of the terminal, the passenger terminal actually remained physically the exact same since 1988. The physical shape of the terminal looks like an E with three concourses (piers) extending out of the main terminal. Concourse 1 and 2 (left and centre) both are reserved for domestic services only while Concourse 3 (right) is reserved for international services only. This design allows seamless integration of both international and domestic services in the same building, albeit segregated concourses. In order to maximise the use of available land in a most effective way possible, GAC has decided to extend the passenger terminal in three directions.
    • Concourse 1 (left) will be extended north-south with 6 new gates;
    • Concourse 2 (centre) will remain the same; and
    • Concourse 3 (right) will be extended eastwardly with 6 new gates.
    This expansion plan would result in 12 new gates (6 for domestic and 6 for international) and expanded tarmac areas to accommodate increased number of planes using the airport.

    Due to north extension of the Concourse 1, the existing tram station at Grosvenor Airport will have to be demolished and relocated underground.

    This terminal expansion project has already been granted a Federal approval and the works are currently underway. As part of the conditions for terminal expansion approval by the Federal Government, GAC is required to look at the possibilities of building a third runway for Grosvenor Airport although GAC already publicly denounced the runway proposal for being too invasive on neighbouring suburbs.
