A Japanese folklore tells a story of a girl so beautiful it angered the heavens, that one day a god turned her into a giant or Daidarabotchi out of jealousy and spite. She wondered the lands, terrfying villages of her grotesque features, until she was finally slain. Her head was chopped off and is said to have formed the Nagaoka-kyo geography as we know it.

    HISTORY

    Bitter start
Kushiro 釧路町is a small fishing town, located south east of Japan's Hokkaido island. It wasn't until 1543 during the Portugese Trading with Japan that the town grew into becoming one of the Hokkaido's vital ports of trade. In 1855 the town became the centerpoint to a conspiracy that would shake the Japanese ruling imperial family apart. The Nagaoka clan, Hokkaido region's oldest and most powerful family had great distaste for the Chrysanthemum throne. In 1920, the eldest son Kishiro married into the throne to smoothen the relations, to the Emperor's sister, Kanade.

    Execution of Kishiro
It wasn't until Emperor Hirohito's decision to further Japan's involvement in the war that the royal family split into two. Word of Kishiro's disagreement with the war spread far across the country gaining him a large support and followers. However, after an arguably staged assasination attempt of the Emperor, the crown quickly accused Kishiro of treason which led to his execution in 1922. His then-pregnant sister Kanade was banished from Honsu and was ordered to live in her new found home of Kushiro.

Formation of the second house of Japan
After the fall of Japan in World War 2, the support for Kanade grew. A decade long motion to start her own ruling house was granted, but limited to the Kushiro region. In 1945, Japan's newest ruling house of the White Swan was formed ruled under Kanade and later passed to her only son, Nagahito. Nagaoka-kyo was assigned the status of Kushiro's capital city on the 22nd December 1945, eve of the current Emperor Akihito's Birthday.

    Modern Nagaoka-Kyo
Emperor Nagahito later developed Nagaoka-Kyo to become one of the world's fastest growing cities and the world's 16th most liveable cities by 2016 statistics. The city thrived financially and remnants of the city's bombed districts and former military bases/ports were turned into public parks or replaced with infastructure. The city won the bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympics.
