Sydney Ports Corporation manages two ports: Sydney Harbour and Botany Bay. This 87 m (285 ft) tower, officially the Port Operations and Communications Centre, overlooks the entrance to Darling Harbour in the Sydney Harbour section. The tower was opened in 1974 by the Hon. L. A. Punch. The control centre has three levels on a concrete column anchored in bedrock in the Millers Point area of central Sydney.
It incorporates radio communications, vessel surveillance through radar and cameras, and the Sydney harbour integrated ports system (ShIPS), an internet-based system for tracking and approving ship movements, freight handling and fuelling.
The tower is the only major port-related facility due to be retained in the redevelopment of the surrounding stevedoring site into the new district of Barangaroo; this development is progressing with the demolition in early 2008 of the large freight buildings on the harbourside.
