Saint Martin Island Map, City Building Contest, Fall 2016

    Saint Martin Island Map, City Building Contest, Fall 2016​

    City Building will take place between August - October 2016. City Builders may submit up to 10 photos by November 1, 2016, for judging in the Official Contest Submission Thread. Winners will be announced November 30, 2016. Winners will be awarded special "banners" that will be displayed under their avatar on XLNation.

    The Rules:
    1. Your City must be built on the Saint Martin Island Map produced by skullz613
    2. Build any type of city you like.
    3. No restrictions on patches or mods
    4. Submit up to 10 Photos in an official thread by November 1, 2016 in the designated forum thread.
    The Spirit of Community

    Share your work as you progress in the building period. Encourage each other. Bystanders can cheer on their favorites. Remember, this is a game and we are supposed to have FUN. This contest is not about the biggest city but the best in various categories.

    Cities will be considered for the following Awards
    Win, Place, Show (Voted by the Community) -- Unique Medal and 15/10/5 Trophy Points

    Category Winners will get a Unique Medal and 10 Trophy Points, These will be awarded by a judging panel. (Most likely I will get non City Building persons to pick winners from the submitted entries).
    • Best rural or farm region
    • Best "Green" City
    • Best "Industrial" City
    • Best RHM interchanges and highways
    • Best Parks and Plazas
    • Best realistic City
    • Best futuristic City
    • Best Vacation City
    • Best "Historical" City
    • Best "Commercial" City
    • Best Looking Skyline
    • Best Looking Harbor
    • Best Looking Airport
    • Best Looking Rail Networks and Stations

    So guys, to get some things straight:

    1) First of all, in case you dislike the map, go **** yourself :D There was enough time in between to make other suggestions ;)
    2) An Island Map? Yeah right! Why did I choose an island to be used as a contest map? Well, it is pretty easy: the area to build on is not that large, so 3 months will surely be enough to fill the whole map this time. Out of the 60 submissions within the last 3 contests, there were about 3 to 5 where that were roughly (and not fully) done. Also, we so far had a river valley map, as well as two coastal maps, so an Island map is something different.
    3) Big thanks to the storm that hindered @skullz613 to go outside instead of making the map...
    :LOL: okay, seriously, thank you, skullz (y)
    4) I guess with the recent addon by @Monty, there will be no need anymore for discussion about photoshopped reality bias.

    That's right Kipate, we needed something different. Being an island map, it will be a challenge to some players. I'm looking forward to see what players can do on a smaller area.

    ah i would like very much to participate in this contest but im not sure :/ Im working on Lurham for more then 1 month, still 2-3 months to finish it.
    And right now im on vacation without cities XXL for at least 20 days :/
    we shall see... gl to all :)

    I would like to think that photo editing would not influence the judge's (voter's) decisions. :whistle:

    You can post previews and photos etc, the official submissions for the contest wont be until later

    I am up for the challenge but right now cannot decide whether the map should be a Latin/Hispanic Island (in the eastern Atlantic close to Spain or in the Caribbean sea) or Scandinavian island in the Baltic or Nordic Sea. I don't think we have very rich resources for a Scandinavian-type architecture.

    The map is once more fantastic and a fantastic competition pick.
    Count me in. . . i 'll do my best to get it done.

    Last one i started something good but had no time to conclude it. . . to much work, grr

    Started experimenting already with the map. . . many questions and things to pick from :)

    I understand your dilemma BahadirB. . . I am just in the same thinking crossroad hahaha. . . similar options in my thoughts

    i even struggle picking XL or XXL to work the map with :unsure:

    I guess picking up a Nordic Style would at least yield some uniqueness to your plannings ;)

    Well, it is good not to be alone struggling with these kinda dilemmas. :)

    And you are right, choice of architectural style is one matter and the dilemma between XL and XXL is another. XL was so good with its trams and ferries and the richer variety of seawalls and sea roads. But I think I will stick with the XXL. Not very happy about that though.

    Well thanks, it's encouraging to hear that. I agree that it would end up some island with unique features, but I am also afraid that the current tools (both in-game stuff and mods) would not suffice to reach that originality. :cautious:
