    Can't agree more with your opinion
    BUT, the problem is ,XL players CAN'T use those maps created by @ronrn ,mine either. For some reason i prefer the in-game textures instead of textures from WM or something else.im not saying that they have been making some really awfull jobs for each contest,but somehow i feels like old CXL maps are not the only option for each contest.

    your critique has valid points. However, I find your criticism a bit one-sided:

    1)
    All the map makers invested a lot of their time and knowledge to create the competition maps, and before the map editor for XXL was released, tools were limited.

    2) Maybe the most important thing to have for a competition map is its simplicity: as you have not participated so far, maybe it was worth hearing my thoughts on that topic (I have participated twice already):

    You have only 3 months to grab a concept and build. Sounds easy, as long as you have directly the number one idea what to build on the map. And then you start doubting what you build, and you start rebuilding some areas. And quickly, the first month is over. And you're panicking :D no, it's true.

    A hyperrealistic map is hard to work with when you want to change parts of the terrain. And also generally, it is hard to work with. Everything takes longer to build. The map may look more real, and you may not need to extensively decorate the left out spaces. But I am not sure if that justifies the difficulties that you have with the area you build on.

    I guess having a hyperrealistic map makes sense only when you don't want to change the terrain. At least within that short time.

    And, Kurtis, don't feel offended, but your general critique 3 weeks before the competition should start comes a bit late, you're the politics scientiest, you should know how important participation is when you are unsatisfied with the status quo, how crucial it is to exchange opinions within time ;)

    Unfortunately until the old CXL game versions pop a fuse and stop working on PC's, we will always have to make the competition map compatible for all versions of XL. Yes the textures are not as good as the XXL maps but that's the limitations of the old editor.
    What would be good is if more people learned the old ways of making a map. It's a lot more work than the new editor but would make my life a little easier as I'm the only one available at the moment who can make them.

    1. we dont wanna exclude xl players from that competition ;)
    2. that (by blablabla) doesnt mean the map has been (or will be) created by blablabla, it names the person who suggested the map (or more likely the area the map will contain later on)
    edit: yeah so far it seems like skullz will do the map as hes the only one left who can do it
    would learn it if i wasnt that lazy and had more time :p

    Wow @kipate old times are resurfacing. You get a bit defensive about these competitions, huh?

    1. Your experience with the contest is respected, but it does not make you more 'experienced' with games or cities XL. Nice try and I am not going to rehash that tired ass argument again. Please, don't do it either and don't go back to talking like you are smarter with cities XL than everyone or me in particular. The argument has never worked on either of our ends. lol

    2. I am sorry I wasn't on the ball with CitiesXL. lmao. I do have other commitments. I'll comment when I want and can do so just like everyone else. I am a geographer and an international conflict mediation specialist; I am not a political scientist. Int. Relations is not politics; politics are a part of it. lol. I didn't realize that I was to communicate on XLnation as if I am at the round table duking it out between waring states.

    3a. Realistic doesn't mean the map has to be complicated. That is entirely too simple in thinking. It is knowing topography and how topography and cartography work in real life. Sometimes map makers do not make natural looking topography or cartography. I would not argue the beauty of equations with you @kipate, I'd maybe leave maps to the experts. Realistic doesn't mean complicated.

    3b. And since this thread was about maps and what we want, I think I am completely fine in being persnickety.... cause we were asked to give opinions for F sake.

    3c. If everyone wants an unrealistic map... then that is what it should be. Again, I just prefer realism; why is my opinion taken more pointedly?

    4. I do not disrespect anyone's work in map making, please, don't even try that line of talk.

    5. My opinions are mine and my timing is my own.

    6. I didn't realize the voting was for what people wanted. I thought it was the maps that have been made. My bad.

    7. @kipate you should be the official 'gamemaster' you kind of 'manage' everyone in the competition blog anyway. lol

    I think an official entry in the resource area is needed for it plus other files and tools needed.
    I will prepare a package to add.
    The original was always available through the French XL site but I remember them having site issues a while back.

    We can do nothing but follow the old way before coming up with a perfect idea about choosing maps for contest.Or making some changes for the rule.

    Maybe its a little bit late for @Kurtis Edwards to give us his opinion about the upcoming contest,In some point,he is right about the unrealistic map issue.

    Yes we can make it better next time,but not now.

    Why CJ is called a resource? As this resource can be used by others? It's just an amateur job, have someone else good at someone else bad. We need to share magazines with mods, not everyone is interested in watching their resources with the modes and spend their time!
